【What is NMN】Nicotinamide mononucleotide (NMN) is a derivative of vitamin B3 (nicotinamide). There are two types of differential isomers of NMN: α and β. Only β-type NMN was found to be biologically active. The main role of NMN is as an intermediate in the biosynthesis of NAD+ in human body. During the biosynthesis of NAD+, NMN is an important substrate of nicotinamide mononucleotide adenosine transferase 1 (NMNAT1) from nucleus and nicotinamide mononucleotide adenosine transferase 3 (NMNAT3) from mitochondria. It was found that NAD+ levels decreased steadily with the increase of age, leading to changes in metabolism and increased susceptibility to disease. Restoring NAD+ levels in old or diseased animals promotes health and longevity.
